The shortest way to see the island’s three great landscapes, the dry zone, the hills and the coast, in under a week. It suits a stopover or the start of a longer stay, and it ends twenty minutes from the airport.

  1. Day 1. Colombo

    Met at the airport and driven to Colombo. After lunch, a tour of the city and its shops.

  2. Day 2. Pinnawala and Dambulla

    Drive 200 km · 4 h 30

    Dambulla 150 m

    North to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, with an elephant ride there, and on to Dambulla for the cave temple in the afternoon.

  3. Day 3. Sigiriya to Kandy

    Drive 110 km · 3 h

    Kandy 500 m

    The climb up Sigiriya first thing, then south through Matale for a spice garden and a gem museum, to Kandy for the Temple of the Tooth and a Kandyan cultural show.

  4. Day 4. Nuwara Eliya

    Drive 80 km · 3 h

    Nuwara Eliya 1,868 m

    The Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, then up through Ramboda past its waterfalls, stopping at a tea factory and garden, to Nuwara Eliya and Victoria Park.

  5. Day 5. Down to Negombo

    Drive 180 km · 4 h 30

    Negombo 2 m

    Out of the hills and west to the beach at Negombo for the last night.

  6. Day 6. Home, or the beach

    Twenty minutes to the airport, or stay on for a few more days by the sea.

Distances and drive times are typical for an unhurried private car, not a promise. Sri Lankan roads outside the expressways are single carriageway through villages, so a hundred and fifty kilometres is usually three hours. Every figure here is an estimate.
